Playing with 'Paper Dolls'
Listening to the poised delivery of The Orkids' Sandra Gallardo on the band's six-song EP "Paper Dolls," it's a little hard to believe she's never been in a band before.
"The first time we played live, I didn't know if I could do it again," says Gallardo, who supplied the alluring vocals for Adam Monica's catchy synth-abundant compositions on "Paper Dolls." "It was so torturing. I'd never sang in front of five people before, and here we were playing before 40 or 50 people. My heart was racing, and I was shaking."
Fortunately for Gallardo, the Columbus native is gaining experience in leaps and bounds and is in cahoots with some veteran players, most notably Monica, who supplied all the instrumentation for the EP and plays guitar and sings on stage.
Also on board are Joshua Schwarber on keyboards, Brad Lee Zimmerman on drums and Sheldon Wolfe on bass and vocals, all of whom were recruited after Gallardo and Monica completed "Paper Dolls" some six months ago.
Originally a classical guitarist, Monica most recently had served a stint in the Athens band Blue Flashing Light (as did Schwarber and Wolfe), but it's clear The Orkids are taking their cues from the group's co-founders.
"I didn't have a writing role in Blue Flashing Light, but with this band, I write all the songs," says Monica, whose group will celebrate the release of "Paper Dolls" on Saturday with a show at the 40 Watt. "This was something I wanted to do before, but never could, which makes it very satisfying."
"This is a different dynamic," Schwarber says. "Adam and Sandra are guiding the ship with regard to our musical direction."
